UKFA Selection and Deselection
TRIALS
UKFA academy holds yearly trials for selection into the Youth Development Pathway program (YDP) throughout the season. Some players that arrive in Hong Kong throughout the term are also offered trials for the YDP, but only after they have successfully completed trials into our other UKFA squads.
The annual trials are posted on social media. Some players are also recommended to us by other clubs in Hong Kong.
All of the players attending are expected to attend at least two trials before a decision is made. Once a player has been selected for the YDP, they will be considered for selection to represent UKFA in either the Premier Youth League (U13-U18), Jockey Club Youth League (U13-U18), and the Junior Football League (U13-U16).
SELECTION
At UKFA we don’t look at one specific area (technical for example), we look across a range of criteria. Some key areas we look for during selection are Game Understanding/Intelligence, Tactical Awareness, Potential to improve in the future, Technical ability, Communication and Physical ability. We look to play players up in the academy as much as possible to challenge players who are ready. If you’re good enough, you’re old enough!
Players and parents/guardians will be contacted to confirm their selection. The player will only be asked to play up an age if we feel it is better for the players’ development pathway.
DESELECTION
The following process is followed if a player is deselected - deselected players would have played for the UKFA in a previous season.
Deselected from the UKFA Premier Youth Team.
Offered a place in UKFA Jockey Club Youth Team.
Deselected from the UKFA Jockey Club Youth Team.
Offered a place in the UKFA Junior Football League Team.
Deselected from the UKFA Junior Football League Team.
Offered a trial at other clubs competing in the Jockey Club League / Junior Football League.
AFTER U18
Once a player can no longer represent the academy, we have options for the player to represent UKFA as a junior coach and provide options for the players to play with senior teams across Hong Kong.
